Traditions
Bormio is still firmly rooted in its traditions.
Among the most important traditions:
“Gabinat” is a custom on Epiphany where, since ancient times, the inhabitants of Bormio have greeted each other by saying the expression "gabinat". The first of the two who manages to utter the word, according to custom, is entitled to receive a gift from the other. The dialect term 'gabinat' derives from the German gabe-nacht (night of gifts).
“L'è fora genejron”, meaning the evening of the 31st of January, involves children making as much noise as possible on that day with the intention of awakening the spring.
L’ “Ors fora dala tana” , celebrated on the 2nd of February, involves luring someone out of their home with a pretext or ruse. This tradition is also linked to the arrival of spring when the bear, once widespread in these areas, came out of its long winter hibernation.
Il Palio delle Contrade, a sporting challenge on skis between the five districts (Buglio, Combo, Dossorovina, Maggiore, Dossiglio).
